Initially previewed in the Y-3 S/S24 Preview, Yohji Yamamoto's fashion line has now unveiled images of the adidas Y-3 Gendo Run.
Over time, Y-3 has increasingly drawn inspiration from iconic adidas designs, presenting tech-infused interpretations of classics like the Campus and Superstar as showcased in the aforementioned preview. While not directly emulating any single model, the Gendo Run continues this trend. Its suede toe cap and transparent mesh Three Stripes echo elements found in models such as the Samba.
The design strikes a balance between avant-garde innovation and familiar features, all filtered through the distinct Y-3 aesthetic. The upper, crafted entirely from nylon mesh, is accented by suede detailing and a nylon strip bearing Yamamoto's signature. Moving towards the back, a leather extension replaces the traditional pull tab, extending beyond the tongue.
The midsole, with its hollowed-out, razor-sharp design, utilizes Pebax polymer technology, a feature commonly found in high-performance runners like the Saucony Endorphin or Nike Air Zoom Tempo Next%. While the shoe's unconventional construction and silhouette are runway-ready, they are engineered for practical use during runs—a notable evolution for the techwear brand. This integration of futuristic design with functional performance reflects a key theme in Y-3's latest collection: "sharp juxtapositions and visceral contrasts."
